2021 was a year of records for Spanish startups, since the investment in them would reach its maximum, reaching up to 4,300 million euros, reaching 287% more than what was invested in 2020 (1,107 million euros). Funds with foreign origin stood at 2,170 million euros, 335% more than in 2020.
Madrid is ahead of Barcelona for the first time in money raised, according to the Startup Ecosystem Observatory of the Bankinter Innovation Foundation.
In 2021, 409 investment operations were carried out in Spain, this growth can be explained by the growth in the average size of the rounds, standing at 10.5 million in 2021 compared to 3.27 million in 2020, 221%, with a median of one million euros.
The most mature rounds such as Series C and Growth were one of the elements that have made this growth possible, while in 2020 they closed six operations, in 2021 they closed 35. Both are the ones that generate the greatest impact on employment and wealth, with the main foreign attractions in our country.
Both Barcelona and Madrid continue to grow year after year as the main investment destination in Spain, although the latter city surpassed the former for the first time (1,510 million compared to 2,487 million), followed by Valencia and the Basque Country.
2021 also had a change in terms of the distribution by sectors of investment operations, with the ‘Business and Productivity’ sector leading, while in 2020 it was led by the Mobility and Logistics sector.
The most striking thing has been not only the volume generated, but also the activity. We also highlight the significant growth in weight of the Health and Wellbeing sector which, if it is not yet among the top 5, has been the second most active during 2021.
